MBERENGWA – In a disturbing development, two small scale miners are feared dead after a mine they were working on collapsed in Mberengwa.
The two, Farai Machenjedze and Desire Mareva were in a 22-meter-deep mine shaft they were working underground when the collapse happened, police has said.
“The victims were covered by falling shaft debris and one of them could be heard crying out for help,” Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.
“Their colleagues who were working on the surface tried to help but no joy as shaft continued to collapse.
One other only identified Machenjedze who was later found half covered with shaft debris still crying for help,” added Insp Mahoko.
Following the incident, Police urged miners to observe all the safety guidelines, in line with the Mines and Minerals Act to avoid such accidents.
