GWERU: In a brazen daylight robbery, two thieves posing as good Samaritans stole a bag belonging to a Chinese national in Gweru’s Central Business District.

The thieves claimed that the victim’s vehicle had a leaking tire, tricking the driver, Robert Mudzimu, into stepping out to investigate.

While Mudzimu was distracted, the thieves snatched the bag from the back seat, making off with passports, a laptop, and an undisclosed amount of money.

“The thieves were driving a silver Honda Fit with fake number plates,” police say.

Realising that he had been scammed, Mudzimu gave a chase, with the Chinese national shouting for help.

The pursuit began at the ZETDC offices and ended at Mtapa vegetable market, where the Honda Fit was involved in an accident.

The Honda Fit was from behind, causing it to lose control and crash into nearby vendor stalls, destroying produce including potatoes, watermelons, and oranges.

“Suspects vanished from the scene while no vendors were harmed,” police added.

While emphasising that the case is still under investigation, police further said the incident highlights cunning tactics employed by thieves.
