KWEKWE — A 25-year-old poacher’s pursuit of a kudu at Morena Game Ranch ended in tragedy when he drowned in the flooded Matura River.

The incident occurred when the poacher, accompanied by three others, spotted the kudu and gave chase.

In a desperate bid to catch his prey, the poacher attempted to cross the swollen river, but was swept away by the powerful currents.

The kudu, however, managed to escape, crossing the river safely and leaving the poachers behind.

The three other poachers, man aged to cross the flooded river and were left to watch in horror as their companion met his demise.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko con firmed the incident that occurred on February 14 at around 10pm.

“It was established that the now deceased Severino Kufahandiuyi (25) and his three friends were poaching in Morena Game Ranch.

“They spotted a kudu and they chased after it until it crossed a flooded Matura River. They attempted to cross the river in hot pursuit and in the process, Kufahandiuyi was swept away,” Insp. Mahoko said.

Police were notified and attended the scene and the body was taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

“Once again, we appeal to members of the public not to be tempted to cross flooded rivers, no matter whatever the circumstances may be,” said the provincial police spokesperson.
