CHIRUMANZU – A man from Chikuruhuhwa Village axed his 85-year-old grandmother for allegedly bewitching his father.
Akim Mazani (24) is now on the run as he fled after the near-fatal attack.
Police are keen to interview him for attempted murder.
It is alleged that on October 20 at around 11 pm, the grandmother Faustina Mazani of Chikuruhuhwa Village under Chief Chirumanzu was asleep in her bedroom when her grandson Akim entered and struck her on the head with an axe.
Akim was accusing her of killing his father through witchcraft.
“The neighbors heard the noise and rushed to Faustina’s homestead to investigate,” police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.
He said they found Akim holding an axe in the yard but fled when he saw them.
The neighbors entered the bedroom and found the complainant lying unconscious.
“They rendered first aid and took the complainant to St Theresa Hospital where she is admitted,” he said.
A report was made at ZRP Charandura who are conducting investigations.
“As investigations are progressing, we call upon members of the public who might have information which might lead to the arrest of Akim to report to the nearest police station,” he said.
“We urge members of the public not to resort to violence when solving their differences.”
