NYANGA: Makoma Village in Nyanga North has turned a new chapter in its fight against poor sanitation and water scarcity after World Vision and the Government of Zimbabwe partnered to develop the area.
Joyful Erick Koso, the Village Head of Makoma, expressed his gratitude for the transformative changes brought to the community.
“We used to struggle with open defecation and because of that, our health at risk.
“Thanks to World Vision and the government, we now have ablution facilities and we also got a piped water system which will definitely put an end to water woes,” said Koso.
Makoma Village has 175 households, and previously, 74 of them had no toilets.
With the donations and the community’s effort, the sanitary situation has significantly improved.
Villagers said the change is life-saving.
“Having a toilet will help us prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases. We are grateful for this program,” said one Lazarus Dambaza.
Naume Kasimunze, another resident, said the availability of water and toilets has helped improve menstrual hygiene.
“Period poverty was a big challenge for us. Now that we have toilets and water, it’s easier for us to maintain proper hygiene during our menstrual cycles,” she said.
