HARARE — A worker was killed in a crane collapse at the Mbudzi Roundabout Interchange construction site on Monday, the project’s contractor, Tefoma Construction (Pvt) Ltd, said in a statement.

The fatal incident occurred during the dismantling of a static tower crane by Manzlink (Pvt) Ltd, a subcontracted rigging specialist firm. According to Tefoma, a mechanical failure caused both the static tower crane and a mobile crane used in the operation to collapse, resulting in the death of a Manzlink employee.

Tefoma expressed condolences to the worker’s family, friends, and colleagues, pledging full cooperation with authorities in the ongoing investigation. The company is also providing support to the deceased’s family and Manzlink during this difficult time.

“The board of directors and management team remain committed to maintaining the highest safety standards across all our project sites,” the company said, adding that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.

The incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in Zimbabwe’s construction industry, where workplace accidents with fatal outcomes remain a recurring concern.
