GWERU: A feminist movement, #Whispers has launched a Virgin Voters Project (VVP) which is aimed at empowering young women to vote.
Speaking at Nashville in Gweru, #Whispers Director Sibonokuhle Buhlungu said the objective is to mobilize young women who are virgin voters.
“Virgin voters simply means first time voters so we are building quality young women ,women who will participate in 2023 elections and also vote for each other,” said Buhlungu.
She added that the project is mainly targeting women since they are the majority population.
“We are the majority population and also this will encourage women to support each other in various leadership positions, “added Buhlungu.
The project has already covered a number of chapters which include Harare ,Chinhoyi,Masvingo and Gweru .
Delight Chivhange reiterated that the virgin voters project is a motivation to young women, which encourages them to embrace their constitutional right to vote.
She added that this project had removed all negativity towards the issue of voting .
“Personally when I came here I assumed the worst about voting but through this engagement, I feel lighter and ready to vote.
One member, Nyasha Gumbodete said the virgin voters project is an added advantage to young women who want to be candidates in the 2023 upcoming elections.
