GWERU – THE late former Warriors defender Tapiwa “Zheveti” Khumbuyani who died at his home in Ascot will be buried tomorrow at Gweru’s Mtapa Cemetery.
Khumbuyani, who played for several Castle Lager Premier Soccer League sides that include giants Caps United, Chapungu FC, Masvingo United, How Mine and Bantu Rovers died of liver complications.
His father Haisa Khumbuyani said his family had lost a breadwinner they relied on for almost everything.
Haisa Khumbuyani thanked the football community for the support given Tapiwa during the time he was not well.
He said they were expecting a number of people from the football community during the burial ceremony.
“We have received a number of enquiries of the burial arrangements and we expect a lot of people,” he said.
In a statement shared on X, CAPS United Football Club said Kumbuyani’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
“Rest in peace former captain and legend Tapiwa Kumbuyani. Your passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who admired your skills on the field, and your spirit off it.
“Your contributions to the game will never be forgotten, and your legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones during this difficult time,” the Harare giants said.
The Premier Soccer League also expressed sorrow over Kumbuyani’s untimely passing. It said in a statement:
“The Premier Soccer League is deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of an esteemed former footballer, Tapiwa Kumbuyani.
“Kumbuyani was not just a player, he was an embodiment of talent, passion, and sportsmanship. His contributions to the sport and our league will forever be cherished.”
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) also posted on X: “A warrior has fallen. We join Zimbabwe’s football family in mourning the sad loss of Tapiwa Kumbuyani. Your contribution to our game will not be forgotten. Thanks for the memories.”
Khumbuyani who retired from playing football in 2019 was capped seven times by the senior national team the Warriors.
Air Force of Zimbabwe side Chapungu, where Tapiwa started his illustrious career as a professional footballer said they will always cherish his outstanding contribution as a player, captain, and ambassador par excellence who raised the Chapungu FC flag high at national team level.
