GWERU: Elivanos Shoko has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of murdering a 61-year-old man in Mberengwa whom he accused of stealing his phone.

The incident took place on December 23, 2023, when Shoko, then 22, confronted the victim.

“The confrontation quickly turned violent after Shoko slapped the victim. The older man retaliated by throwing a stone at him.

“In response, Shoko charged, grabbed the man by the neck, and stabbed him in the chest with an okapi knife. The victim died at the scene,” the court heard.

Shoko fled, but a police report led to his arrest.

In a similar incident, Takudzwa Mugariri, a 27-year-old man from Marozva village in Shurugwi, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for murdering his 94-year-old grandmother.

Mugariri, who appeared in court this week, armed himself with a log which he wielded on his grandmother to death, accusing her of casting a curse on him and his siblings.

On February 3, 2024, Mugariri went to his grandmother’s homestead, claiming she was responsible for the family’s suffering, misfortunes, and poverty.

He then torched her clothes and traditional medicines before striking her with the log several times, leading to her death.

A police report was lodged, resulting in Mugariri’s arrest.
