GWERU Rugby, formerly Gweru Sports Club will this weekend host the Gweru 7s Rugby Challenge with a total of 10 teams expected to participate.

Gweru Rugby chairman Joseph Mudzingwa said they expect five teams from Bulawayo, one each from Masvingo, Zvishavane, and Plumtree.

Mudzingwa said despite not getting a lot of support with the planning of the tournament, he paid tribute to local businessman Patrick Chikwanda of Gramlex who is contributing the ambulance and Mahogany TV, which has made commitments.

“We are organizing this tournament from a personal capacity and have so far paid for the field.

“We are also trying to boost morale for the Gweru boys as it has not been easy given many challenges such as not having a rugby field and transport to get to games,” he said.

“Our aim for holding this tournament is to give Midlands a chance to prove itself and give hope to the young players as well as to try and show corporate businesses that even though we don’t have resources we still thrive to give Midlands rugby a voice,” he added.

Several rugby stakeholders in the city have blasted the decision to convert the GSC rugby field into a soccer field, which is now being used by Sheasham Gweru Queens for its training sessions.

Mudzingwa added and said ever since the conversion of the GSC rugby field into a soccer pitch, some players like himself have joined Bulawayo teams league.

Apart from rugby, Mudzingwa said there will be a lot of fun and entertainment.
