GWERU: In a long-awaited development, The City of Gweru has revived malfunctional traffic lights.
The city had gone for close to a decade without functional traffic lights following a stand-off with a Chinese contractor whose issue was being handled by way of arbitration.
Council had also lost close to a million in the unfinished project.
“E.D Mnangagwa/ Lobengula Street Traffic Signal now working,” council said in a flash WhatsApp Message.
This brings the total number of functional traffic lights in Gweru CBD to 5.
Gweru residents have welcomed the development but also highlighted that they expect more development to come from the City Fathers.
“We are thrilled to see the city council taking concrete steps to improve traffic safety, the new traffic lights will undoubtedly make a huge difference in preventing accidents and easing traffic congestion,” said Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) director Cornelia Sepliwe.
Meanwhile, council’s move of installing advanced traffic lights answers the call of NDS1 of upgrading traffic management systems which entails installing modern traffic lights, surveillance cameras and intelligent transportation systems to reduce congestion and improve road safety.
