HARARE – Seventy-seven people were killed in road accidents across Zimbabwe during the festive period from 15 December to 26 December 2024, a rise from 71 fatalities recorded over the same period last year, police said Friday.
In a statement, police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said 401 people were injured in 1,211 accidents in the period under review, compared to 393 injuries in 1,454 accidents during the same period in 2023.
Nyathi attributed the increase in fatalities to fatigue and negligence by drivers, noting that most accidents involved private vehicles. The major public transport-related incident occurred on 22 December, when three buses collided, killing two people.
The deadliest days were Christmas and Boxing Day, with 13 and 11 deaths reported, respectively. On Christmas, 16 people were injured in 104 accidents, while 40 were injured in 87 crashes on Boxing Day.
“Accidents involving pedestrians trying to cross the roads have also been recorded. Drivers are urged to be observant especially when approaching built-up areas or places frequented by the public including residential areas,” Nyathi said.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so. Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling on the country’s roads,” he continued.
“The public is advised to report errant drivers on the roads at any nearest police station or call National Complaints Desk number 0242 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197. The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce all road rules and regulations without fear or favour. On the other hand, motorists are implored to be responsible and effectively contribute towards road safety in the country.”
