Redcliff landlord convicted for attacking tenant

KWEKWE: The Kwekwe Magistrate Court recently sentenced Mercy Budha (25), 15 months in prison for assaulting a tenant by hitting the victim with a stone.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the case and said the accused assaulted her tenant for supposedly handling her gas tank improperly.

“The offender accused the victim of handling her gas tank carelessly, leading to a confrontation wherein she hit the victim with a stone once on the mouth.

“The victim sustained injuries, including three broken teeth, a lacerated and bruised upper lip and a bruised lower lip,” said the NPA.

Budha is however set to perform community service after the court suspended her jail sentence.

“The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court sentenced the offender to 15 months imprisonment, with 10 months suspended and the remaining 5 months were suspended on condition the offender performs 420 hours of community service,” the NPA added.

In a related incidence, a Kwekwe man, Stephen Ndlovu was also convicted in the same court physically abusing his daughter in-law.

The father-in-law got involved in a dispute between his son and his wife and ended up hitting his daughter in law in the face leaving her with a swollen face.

Ndlovu was fined US$100 by the court and failure to pay he will be imprisoned for 2 months.

Meanwhile, the NPA released its performance indicators for the first quarter of 2025 for the Midlands Province, showing that there are 3,268 cases at hand, 2,345 cases completed, and 923 remaining, resulting in a clearance rate of 71.75%.
