Never attempt to race a train – NRZ warns

GWERU: The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has warned drivers to practice caution and avoid racing trains at level crossing points following an accident resulted in a police truck being hit by a train in Gweru.

The Police Mahindra vehicle was hit by a train wagon at a railroad after the driver allegedly failed to give way.

“This is the second such incident this year following a similar incident in January involving a ZRP Ford Ranger driven by a police officer,” the NRZ wrote.

The recent incident, “…occurred when the police officer driving the vehicle failed to stop at the level crossing as required by the rules,” the NRZ further wrote.

The authority also urged drivers to practice caution whenever they approach railway lines.

“We urge all drivers, including police officers, to exercise extreme caution at road/rail crossings. Always come to a complete stop, check for approaching trains, and proceed with caution. Never attempt to race a train,” they warned.

Police is yet to give an official statement and the condition of the two police officers on board the car is yet to be established.
