GWERU: There was a commotion at the Gweru townhouse recently when a swarm of bees invaded some offices and the revenue hall, stinging both clients and some council officials.
Witnesses said the huge swarm which came out of the blues attacked City of Gweru Health Director Sam Sekenhamo and Chief Security Officer, Josphat Munyari.
“I was coming out from the security department office when I saw the Director of Health and other officials scurrying for cover. It was when I then realized from screams that there was a swarm of bees stinging everyone around and I retreated back into one of the offices.
“Soon, the Chief Security Officer Josphat Munyari dashed into the office saying he had been stung,” said a witness, Samson Matiza.
The bees did not spare clients who had come to pay bills.
Another witness, Memory Moyanna who had visited the council to pay her bills said business came to a standstill at the townhouse as everyone sought cover.
“I was lucky not to be attacked but some colleagues who were in the queue got stung.I went on to seek cover in a nearby office,” said another eyewitness, Memory Moyana who had visited council revenue hall to pay her bills.
“Everyone is shocked at the townhouse because of this mysterious swarm. No one knows where it emanated from. It just came, attacked a few staffers and disappeared,” added a council official who declined to be named.
Gweru City Council Spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee declined to comment on the issue.
Efforts to get a comment from city mayor, Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi were fruitless as his phone went unanswered.
His Deputy, Cleopas Shiri however confirmed the development but said he had no full details on the incident.
“I only heard there was a swarm of bees that attacked people at our offices but am yet to get a brief,” he said
