GWERU: This year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Republic police Commissioner General’s race lived to its billing with athletes from across the country converging at Mkoba Teachers’ College in Gweru this Saturday to endure the 21 kilometer race.
In the men’s category it was the army side Black Rhinos athletics club duo of Moses Tikinyu and Tatenda Hove who proved to be masters of the game after occupying first and second place respectively.
“I am very happy to manage this feat. The exercise that I have been putting made it possible for me to achieve this feat. I want to thank the ZRP for affording us the opportunity to showcase our talent like this,” said Hove.
Tarakinyu is a seasoned runner who recently won the BTC 42-kilometer marathon in Botswana after clocking two hours 14 minutes.
In the women category, it was Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ Caroline Mhandu who proved to be a cut above the rest.
“I am very happy to have won this race. I want to encourage people to keep on exercising as this will help in dealing with some chronic diseases,” said Mhandu.
ZRP Commissioner General Stephen Mtamba’s rallying point was the need for society to work hand in glove with the law enforcement agencies in dealing with the drug and substance abuse menace.
“As we continue to uphold our long enduring motto, pro logo, pro patria and propopulo, that is the law, for the country and for the people, we take pride in making use of these platforms to revitalize police public cooperation for safe and secure Zimbabwe for all. It is pleasing to see young people participating in this year’s road race.
“This is particularly encouraging given the scourge of drug and substance abuse that has crept our society, threatening to destroy its very foundation. The ZRP alone cannot fight this dangerous scourge on its own, but require conjoined and multi-sectoral approaches in addressing both the demand and supply of dangerous drugs,” Commissioner General Mutramba said.
The event marked the 14th edition of the Commissioner General’s race.
