MUTARE: Youth in Manicaland have voiced against growing pollution of Sakubva River, calling it an ‘environmental crisis’ that demands immediate action.

The river has become a dumping site for waste, endangering human health and aquatic life.

“Sakubva River is dying before our eyes, and it feels like no one cares,” said Jussa Nhari Kudherezera, director of The Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA).

“Local companies are some of the worst offenders, dumping industrial waste into the river.

“But residents are also contributing to the problem because many don’t know how to dispose of their waste properly,” he added.

The youth are frustrated by what they see as a lack of enforcement of environmental laws and weak action by authorities.

“We need EMA and the local council to take this issue seriously. There are laws to stop pollution, but they are not being enforced,” Kudherezera further said.

Meanwhile, MAYA has not only just voiced but took action towards clearing section of the River which stretches from Chikanga footbridge to St. Joseph.

The initiative, aimed at removing waste and raising awareness, revealed the scale of the problem.

The youth’s complaints echo President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call during the National Clean-Up Campaign launch.

“The growing waste dumps and scarcity of clean water demand innovative solutions,” President Mnangagwa said.
