GOKWE – A suspected mental patient mercilessly slit a one and half year-old toddler’s throat with a kitchen knife after they were left in a hut.
The mental patient Rutendo Shayanewako (25), a relative to the boy’s family has since been arrested.
The toddler, Brilliant Mhike died instantly as blood was oozing from the deep cut.
Police said the incident occurred at Village Magazo under Chief Sai in Gokwe at around midday.
Emmanuel Mahoko, the police spokesperson said Thandiwe Bheura (41) was preparing food in the kitchen with Mhike, who was her grandson when Shayanewako who is her brother in-law entered the kitchen.
Mahoko said Bheura served Shayanewako food and then went outside to serve other family members.
“On return, Bheura found Shayanewako cutting Mhike on the throat with a kitchen knife.
She rushed and stopped him but he had already inflicted a deep cut on the child’s throat,” Mahoko said.
Mhike died from excessive bleeding as the family tried to stop the bleeding.
Following the case, the police advised that mentally challenged relatives should be put in mental institutions as they continue to commit heinous crimes including murder like in this case.
