GWERU: Gweru police has arrested 17 people making three gangs linked to a series of robberies in and around Gweru during period stretching from September 2020.
Stolen property worth thousands of dollars was also recovered and Midlands Province police spokesperson Inspectors Emmanuel Mahoko says investigations are still underway to arrest some of the gang members on the run.
“We have arrested 17 suspected armed robbers and police are still investigating whereabouts of other gang members who are still on the run. During commission of offences, the suspects in question were armed with weapons which include firearms, axes, machetes, knockberries and many more,” Said Mahoko in a statement.
“Property recovered include two motor vehicles, cellphones, gold detectors, television sets and laptops,” Mahoko added.
Arrested suspects have been identified as Shephered Gundani (36), Mugove Matora (33), Charles Munyanyiwa (29), Nison Dube (25), Panashe Bhunu (31), Talent Bhunu (31), Percy Mugauri (25), Benjamin Chipapata (28), Benard Sibanda (26), Kudzai Maphosa (24), Tinashe Mharadze (26), Prince Tazvivinga (28), Nicholas Sinengo (24), Talent Ranganai (33), prosper Rwodzi (33) and Jonas Musekiwa (29).
Brief accounts of robberies show that the gangs were behind robbery of USD2400 from a 90-year-old man in Xmas Gift, robbery of USD9000 from a homestead in Nkululeko plots and robbery of property worth USD5800 from a nun’s home.
