GWERU – The contractor of the Senga Messenger’s Camp block and flats in Gweru recently announced that the work initiated under the government’s 100 day cycle will be completed be end of year, a target which is approximately 1000 days post completion deadline.

The programme resumed in 2021 is part of the 14 national priority projects under the National Development Strategy (NDS1), targeting to deliver affordable and quality housing in urban and rural areas and was halted last year due to an impasse between the contractor and suppliers.

Construction works resumed this week after meetings between the contractor and government officials, amid indications that an amicable solution has since been reached.

The contractor said the project will be concluded by the end of the year.

Senga Messenger of Court site clerk, Tariro Makonye said, “We are very happy that we have head some fruitful discussions with authorities and ironed out some hurdles in the process. As the contractors we are more than prepared to finish this project in the shortest possible time.

“As you can see, much of the progress here was done in 2021 before we started facing some bit of challenges. Now that we are back on site after some fruitful discussions, we hope we will be finishing the major works by year end save for some few touch-ups.”

The community is expecting positive results with many saying the project is earmarked to change the face of Senga suburb.

The project, which comprises four blocks of flats, will accommodate 64 families upon completion.

Last year, President Mnangagwa launched the Zimbabwe National Human Settlements Policy, a medium-term programme envisaged to drive national housing development where government, the private sector and individuals are partnering reduce the housing backlog which stands at around 1,2 million.
