GWERU – The Midalnds Province are this year’s hosts of the Commissioner General of Police Road Race which has been set for 29 March at Mkoba Teacher’s College.
Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko has confirmed the development and said this year’s race is aimed to further the institution’s connection with the community.
“We are happy and we confirm that this year’s race is coming to the Midlands Province. The event which rotates hosts was held in in Victoria Falls last year and it stands as a great chance to market ourselves since it draws scores of people from across the province.
“More importantly, this year’s event also aims to see police further their connection with the community as entertainment will be witnessed in their neighborhoods. Athletes will pass through all Gweru suburbs and attendees are registered regardless of background, race or locale. We really wish to see all who wish to participate register and run,” Insp Mahoko said.
The registration fee for the race has been pegged at US$20.00 and will be done online.
Insp Mahoko also said there are several categories to make sure inclusivity is achieved. He also emphasized that there are plenty prices to be won.
“More than 1000 athletes are expected to take part in the 5km, 10km and 21km races. Categories also range from juniors, tertiary, veterans, open, masters, wheelchairs and grandmasters.
“All top three contestant will receive an award and more to it, the first 800 winners from all categories will receive a medal,” added Insp Mahoko.
Meanwhile, last year’s event in Victoria Falls managed to draw athletes from Kenya which police say is “…an indication that the race is growing from strength to strength”.
During the 2025 event, Wayne Kabondo of Mr Pace Athletics Club won the 21km men’s open category race in a time of 1.04.31 while Ethel Pangiso of Zimbabwe Republic Police Athletics Club won in the 21km women’s open category in a time of 1.17.51.
In the 10km race category Tatenda Trust Hove of Black Rhinos athletics Club won the men’s open category race in a time 32.14 with Melody Chikonzi, a civilian member of the ZRP Athletics Club won scooping gold for the women’s open race in a time of 39.14.
Tulanye Mudenda of Binga also represented the juniors in the 10km distance where he scooped gold after finishing the race in a time of 39.26.
