GWERU – Castle Lager Premier Soccer League returnees Telone FC received a major boost from their premier sponsors Telone PVT LTD which has given the team renewed impetus.
Telone chief executive officer Lawrence Nkala announced a modest US800 000 capital injection at the team’s kit unveiling and fund-raising dinner last weekend.
Telone also received financial support from Glow Petroleum, which handed over US$10 000.
There were also contributions from Netone, Eagle’s Nest, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube, Silobela legislator Jonah Nyevera and other Gweru companies.
“We realise the impact of sport in economic development, employment creation and social cohesion that is why we are excited to announce a sponsorship of US$800 000 for the team for the 2024 season,” Nkala said.
He however noted that the US$800 000 capital injection was not enough and that is why they were reaching out to partners to give additional support.
Apart from scoring goals and winning matches, Nkala said they hope the team would also score victories in the fight against social ills, inspiring young minds to chase their dream and fostering a culture of sportsmanship that go beyond football grounds.
Buoyed by the capital injection, Telone coach Tendai Chikuni said they were confident of avoiding relegation this time around after their maiden year in the PSL ended after a one-year flirtation.
“We are not looking at being relegated because we will definitely survive,” he said.
Chikuni said he was banking on his team’s depth after acquiring a number of players during off-season to avoid the chop.
The Wifi Boys, as Telone is affectionately known enlisted the services of goalkeeper Matripples Muleya and defender Evian Mafirenyika from Triangle, defender Polyester Shoko from Sheasham and midfielder Hugh Chikosa from Simba Bhora.
They also brought in the ZPC Munyati pair of striker Obrey Nyandoro and attacking midfielder Lloyd Gweriva.
Chikuni also added defender Admire Dzimbunu from Mwoors and recommended the return of Washington Navaya from giants Highlanders.
The highly travelled coach said he was not finished with the recruitment exercise and was looking at adding firepower to the striking force.
