HWANGE: A 45-year-old woman from Hwange was sentenced after being convicted of physically assaulting her husband in a domestic dispute.

The National Prosecution Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) revealed that the woman appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court on charges of violating the Domestic Violence Act.

According to the NPA Zimbabwe, the woman and her 56-year-old husband argued over food.

The NPA Zimbabwe stated, “The accused person stabbed her husband once on the left elbow using a kitchen knife and struck him with a dinner plate on the mouth.”

“She also struck him several times all over the body using enamel cups,” leaving the husband with “a swollen right upper lip and a deep cut on the left elbow.”

The court sentenced the woman to 12 months in prison, of which six months were suspended for five years on the condition that she does not commit any similar offense.

The remaining six months were also suspended on condition that she completes 210 hours of community service.

The NPA Zimbabwe urged citizens to settle conflicts peacefully.

“The NPAZ would like to urge members of the public to find peaceful ways of resolving disputes and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” NPA Zimbabwe said.

In a separate case, a 37-year-old Hwange man, Chasemore Ngwenya, was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of stock theft.

According to the NPA Zimbabwee, Ngwenya was convicted of stealing five cattle, “three branded cattle and two calves”, from his mother in 2019 in the Madumabisa grazing area.

The cattle were valued at USD1,500, but “nothing was recovered.”

The NPA Zimbabwe reported that the theft was only discovered on 4 November 2024 when police found Ngwenya at the GVZ grazing area “skinning another cow,” valued at USD450.
