Gas suffocation kills two City of Gweru employees

GWERU: In a tragic incident that occurred in Gweru today, two council employees succumbed to gas suffocation while on duty, working on a manhole in Athlone suburb.

Their names are yet to be announced.

City Of Gweru communications officer Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed the sad incident.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the tragic loss of two city employees who passed away while on duty in Athlone. The incident occurred when they were working on a manhole and unfortunately succumbed to gas suffocation,” Chingwaramusee said in a statement.

“We will conduct a thorough investigation into this to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future,” she added.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident, an American provincial court judge recently fined the Town of Kindersley $175,000 for the death of an employee two years ago.

The town worker was exposed to poisonous gas and died while responding to an emergency sewer blockage.
