10 percent growth for Midlands – ZAMPS

GWERU – Midlands Province recorded a 10,9 percent growth rate for 2022, showing that it is on the right path towards achieving a better life for its residents.

Speaking during the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) district data sheets and provincial Gross Domestic Product dis- semination workshop, Zimstat national accounts and analysis manager Tapiwa Gumbo said the growth was a result of a number of drivers including mining, agriculture, accommodation and food services among others.

The growth, Gumbo said, also signalled a recovery from the Covid-19 period.

The 2022 Value added for the province was estimated at ZWL $2096.74 billion.

“The GDP for the province increased from ZWL $22.82 billion in 2021 to ZWL $25.30 billion in 2022 showing that the economy recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

The provincial GDP decreased from ZWL $26 billion in 2019 to ZWL $21,13 billion in 2020, a negative growth rate of -18,7 percent attributed to Covid-19.

It increased in 2021 to ZWL $22,82 billion, marking the start of a steady increase.

Gumbo said the increase was as a result of increasing in mining and quarry which managed ZWL $7 billion, wholesale and re tail ZWL $3,6 billion, agriculture ZWL $3,1 billion and manufacturing ZWL $2,5 billion.

There was also growth in accommodation and food service activities, financial and insurance activities and a host of other activities.

Director economic affairs in the Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution Kosheni Mtisi said the indicators were important as it makes them see where need to put effort in the development trajectory.
