BIKITA: From dusty local fields to packed stadiums, Mirriam Bera had been her son’s (Courage Bera) rock, cheering him on every step of the way.

As a young boy, Courage’s passion for football was evident, and Mirriam dedicated herself to nurturing his dream.

She spent countless hours driving him to training sessions, watching him play in local tournaments, and offering words of encouragement.

“I have never been so proud. Seeing Courage as a young boy play football in the dusty fields with his childhood friends gave me more reasons to support him ahead of his career,” Mirriam said.

As Courage Bera grew older, his talent and dedication earned him a spot at Pamushana High School.

“The crowd cheering him during the years he represented his team through the NASH Tournaments would always bring joy to my heart. Some may not believe but it also gave me good sleep,” Marriam added.

A trial stint at French club Lorient and ultimately Bikita Minerals FC was part of Bera’s journey.

Mirriam’s pride swelled, but she didn’t miss a beat.

She has travelled to every match, rain or sunshine, her voice hoarse from cheering, her heart full of joy. She watched her son evolve into a skilled player, and eventually, a team captain.

“I hope age will not catch up with me as I enjoy cheering my boy. I will also say I do not support any team but rather support the group which my boy joins.”

Through injuries, setbacks, and triumphs, Mirriam remained a constant presence. Her unwavering support gave Courage the confidence to push through challenges and strive for greatness.

“The game has its dark sides. As Bikita Minerals FC neared entrance premiership promotion, Courage had an injury. This was not his first of cause but the hunger to see him play top flight football locally got me shivering,” Mirriam explained.

As he signed his first playing contract in the premier league, Mirriam beamed with pride, knowing her unwavering support had played a part in his success.

Years later, as Courage “Kaka” led his team onto the Rufaro field in a league match against Caps United, Mirriam sat in the stands, tears streaming down her face.

She thought back to the countless hours, sacrifices, and dreams they’d shared. In that moment, she knew it had all been worth it – seeing her son live his dream, with her by his side every step of the way.
