REDCLIFF: A hail storm that hit Redcliff on Monday left a trail of destruction as houses in Torwood suburb were destroyed leaving families exposed to the harsh weather while some nursed injuries.

Rutendo and Simbi Park were also affected.

Over 30 houses had their roofs damaged and some blown off.

A one-year-old nine-month-old baby was also a victim and is receiving treatment at Redcliff Hospital.

Victims say they were lucky to survive the unfortunate storm.

“We have God to thank for sparing our lives as the wind was very strong and given that these houses are very old and not properly reinforced because of the nature of the material used, it was easier for the roofs to be blown away.

Most people lost property worth hundreds of dollars, especially electrical appliances, while some are now homeless,” said one resident

Redcliff Municipality has since reacted by giving affected families alternative accommodation.

“Torwood Admin and Torwood hospitals have since been identified as evacuation centers. We will assist affected families as much as we can,” said Redcliff Municipality Services Manager Kaiwell Musonza.

Musonza also said that with the emerging emergencies, the council is tipped to commence awareness on disaster where residents will be taught and encouraged to do constant checks on their infrastructure as most houses in areas like Torwood are old.
