SHURUGWI: The Shurugwi town council is looking for a strategic partner in solid waste management as the local authority seeks to turn waste disposal into a viable business.
Solid waste management has become a headache for most local authorities, with the Shurugwi Town council no exception.
The local authority which recently identified a new dumpsite on the outskirts of the town is now scouting for strategic partnerships that could turn waste into business among a host of other initiatives meant to deal with the waste menace.
“We have acquired a waste management truck which is yet to be supplied by the supplier. In addition, we have also established health clubs where our personnel in the health department move around educating the community on proper waste management.
“We have areas like ward one which belongs to ZIMASCO which makes it difficult for us to construct roads. We have since employed people to carry the waste to the areas reachable by the refuse trucks,” said Shurugwi Town Council Housing Officer Fortune Marevesa.
During an appreciation visit to the council recently, The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts Chairperson, Dexter Nduna said parliament is in support of the local authority’s initiative.
“As a parliament, our oversight role is to ensure that public funds are meaningfully utilized. The local authority is doing well in trying to deal with solid waste management.
“It’s refreshing to note that they are now thinking of generating income through proper solid waste management.
A lot of solid can be recycled and people can make money out of it. We will offer them our maximum support in their endeavor,” Nduna said.
The initiative of recycling waste is gaining traction across the globe as it generates income and helps in the preservation of the environment.
