GWERU based artist Denis Simbarashe Mrewa popularly known as Lewaz Skattah in the music circles has through his foundation, H&M Foundation reached out to his Murehwa rural home and refurbished a learning block at Chidiya Primary School.
Mrewa said he was motivated to reach out after witnessing how uncomfortable Early Childhood Development classes seemed uncomfortable to be learning from a dilapidated classroom.
He also says his foundation wishes to bring more classroom blocks to rural schools so as to lessen the burden for children who are traveling long distances to access schooling facilities.
“As a foundation, we felt it was proper to motivate the young learners through the provision of a standard classroom as the one they were using was in bad shape. This is also just the start of charity work towards schools development as we are sure that through supporting education, the future of our communities will be in safe hands,” he said.
Asked why he chose Murehwa while his fame rooted in the Midlands Province, Mrewa said he is an African who never forgets his roots amid fame.
“I am African, Zimbabwean in particular and we were nurtured in a way that encouraged us to know our roots and always come back no matter what. Projects for Midlands may later come but for now, I am working on projects we have set up in Murehwa,” he added.
Meanwhile, the current gesture through their Dzidzo/Imfundo Program is an addition to work that has been ongoing as H&M Foundation has already been paying school fees for 100 disadvantaged pupils in Murehwa.
“We have already been doing work in Murehwa but funds at the moment are the major limitation. We hope to engage in more development work once we get more sponsors,” Mrewa further said.
