Bulawayo businessman accused of mine asset theft

A Bulawayo businessman, Mohamed Daka, is facing theft charges brought by Sheng AN Mining, a Hope Fountain-based mining company. Daka is alleged to have conspired with Dumisani Dube (already facing charges) to seize control of the company’s assets.

The case hinges on the claim that Daka and Dube attempted to take over Sheng AN Mine despite it being a separate entity from the defunct Fools Investments. In April 2024, Daka reportedly placed the dissolved Fools Investments under Corporate Rescue, falsely representing it as Sheng AN Mining. This move led to the appointment of Dumisani Dube as the Corporate Rescue practitioner.

The crux of the allegations lies in the sale of a US$281,750 excavator, leased to Sheng AN Mining, to Simba Dumbura of Mutare for a significantly reduced price of US$150,000. The state claims this was part of a scheme to permanently remove the excavator from the mining company’s possession.

Law enforcement recovered the stolen excavator in Mutare on July 10, 2024. The vehicle is now crucial evidence in the case. Authorities have also obtained documents confirming the cash transaction, with Daka’s signature as a witness.

Daka was granted bail by Bulawayo regional magistrate Shingi Mutiro under specific conditions, including a US$500 bail amount and regular reporting to the police.

The case is ongoing.
